Life in the Eyes of a Puppy

This is a short story I wrote for AssociatedContent.com about a pup named Daisy as she recounts the story of her puppyhood.
————————-
Although my memory is a bit hazy now, I still remember the day I was born. I came into this world crying as Mama licked me clean. I was so cold and wet, but her tongue was warm and I got this soft, fuzzy feeling as she tucked me under her body. I drank something that tasted delicious and I began to feel a little stronger.
I was alone with my Mama that first night. I couldn’t walk yet, so I ate and slept. By the time I woke up in the morning, I had five siblings. Then more and more puppies seemed to appear out of nowhere all morning long. Pretty soon, there were eleven of us piled in a heap next to our Mama, fighting for her milk.
In the months to come, we came to learn that we had to fight for our food, or else we’d go hungry. In the beginning, everything was black, but we could smell when our Mama was near. Then there were these strange things that smelled funny and they came to pick us up and hold us. We later learned they were called ‘people’. At first, we were all scared, but the people held us close and kept us warm. Oh, I just loved when they ran their hands over my fur!
One day, I was finally able to open my eyes. How strange that was! I could finally see what my Mama looked like. And those people – wow, they sure were big when I was just a pup! And then I was able to explore our living quarters, which were a little cramped with twelve of us. But I was a curious little puppy and Mama was constantly pulling me away from my adventures.
Our lives became quite comfortable where we were. Sometimes we were allowed to go outside, which was fun because there was snow on the ground and it was so much fun to play in. But I never once considered that our family would split up.
